In the interest of our national security, Hassoun cannot be allowed on American soil after he so explicitly threatened the U.S.

United For A Free Syria (UFS) denounces the upcoming visit of Ahmad Badreddine Hassoun, Syrian state-appointed cleric and Assad loyalist, to Washington D.C. on June 28. The Grand Mufti of Syria – who threatened to orchestrate suicide bombings in the United States and Europe – will be speaking at an event that is sponsored by the Foundation for Middle East Pease, “Coexistence and Dialogue in Syria.”
The event taking place on June 28, 2012 will host Bishop Luka El Khoury and Dr. Nasser Ani, as well as Hassoun. The discussion is being hosted by the Foundation for Middle East Peace at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
In October 2011, according to CBS News, Hassoun threatened to send suicide bombers to the U.S. and E.U. if those countries engaged in military intervention against the Assad regime, which had killed, tortured and detained thousands of civilians since the Syrian uprising began in March. Then, Hassoun’s statement appeared to be an extreme response to the international community’s growing condemnation of the Assad regime’s brutality against its civilians. On Al Jazeera, prominent Syrian scholar Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi responded to Hassoun’s threats, saying that “Hassoun does not represent the Syrian Clerics nor does he have a mandate from the Syrian people.”
UFS, as well as other Syrian American organizations, has called upon fellow Americans to urge the U.S. State Department to deny Hassoun’s entry to the U.S. based on his threats of terrorism and to request that the Foundation for Middle East Peace remove him from the panel discussion.
UFS Chairman Dr. Yahya Basha stated, “In the interest of our national security, Hassoun cannot be allowed on American soil after he so explicitly threatened the U.S.” Basha continued, “A forum that focuses on coexistence and dialogue in Syria is valuable, but Hassoun’s rhetoric thus far is contrary to the spirit of such a discussion. Ahmad Hassoun is a staunch Assad loyalist who has consistently and abashedly aligned himself with the horrific actions of the Assad regime. Ultimately, his contribution is counterproductive and damaging to the well being of the Syrian people.”
