As the cost of fuel reaches crippling levels, one of the UK's leading motoring entrepreneurs has told drivers they could be saving money and helping the environment through a simple check on their car tyres once a month.

With the average price of petrol between May and June hitting 117.6p and 130.5p for diesel, Mike Welch, boss of Blackcircles.com said drivers were needlessly throwing away £1.4billion ever year through under-inflated tyres.

According to a recent survey around 95 per cent of vehicles on the road have at least one tyre under-inflated by 10 per cent leading to a reduction in fuel efficiency.

The cost of under-inflated tyres is not only hitting the UK's 30 million motorists in the pocket but also contributing to global warming with more carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere.

Drivers can easily check their tyre pressure by using the facilities at their local supermarket which are usually free.

Mike said: "Nobody can afford to throw away money needlessly at the moment and a quick check on your tyre pressure once a month can make a real difference.

"It is important to remember that no money saving tip can work effectively in isolation. It is about combining money savings on your car with everything else in your life."

Mike added: "Just because times are tough, and we have to be a little more careful with our money, does not mean we have to let go of our environmental aspirations. As tyre inflation
demonstrates, there are ways to do both."

Eco sensitive drivers have a whole range of methods they can adopt to reduce their carbon footprint. These include sticking to speed limits, cutting out short journeys by car or if they are in the process of buying a car going for a model that is more fuel efficient.

The Blackcircles.com boss, who was only 23 when he set up his firm six years ago, also challenged the Government to come up with smart solutions to the problems facing consumers.

"Smart solutions require smart people and now is the time for the leaders of our country to start earning their salaries," said Mike.

"It is easy to take the plaudits when times are good. The test of a good businessmen is the ability to successfully manage a company out of difficult times and that is the challenge facing Gordon Brown and his team."
