Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-size business-to-consumer companies, is releasing a statement emphasizing the need for businesses to develop user-friendly mobile strategies that accommodate the different user experiences on both smartphones and tablets.
"Conventional online marketing companies tend to lump smartphones and tablets together when they talk about mobile devices and developing mobile-friendly sites," says Marco Reuter, business development manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions. "Because smartphone and tablet users access their devices for different purposes, businesses need to develop unique platforms to accommodate these significant differences."
Research shows consumers are more apt to use a tablet to visit retail and automotive sites, while smartphone users access sites for services and products necessary for daily living, including consumer packaged goods and financial services. On top of that, a recent report shows that almost 40% of people use their tablets to shop, while only eight percent do so through smartphones. The study also shows that 38% use tablets to compare prices, as opposed to 15% of respondents using smartphone for the same task. "While more and more Canadians are using mobile devices to access the Internet and shop, they are using their mobile devices in different ways," Reuter adds. "That means businesses need to ensure their sites are geared towards not just their target audience, but also the mobile devices they use. That’s because 54% of smartphone users think less of brands that fail to provide a mobile-friendly experience, and 45% will look for brands that do." According to reports, smartphones are the mobile device of choice for Canadians, with a 62% share of the market. At the same time, 25% of Canadians own a tablet, and that number is expected to continue to rise. Even though smartphones are more commonly used than tablets, people find tablets are easier to use than smartphones when it comes to browsing the internet, watching a video, or shopping, notes Reuter. Smartphones, on the other hand, are preferred by on-the-go consumers. "There’s more to a successful mobile marketing campaign than simply knowing who your target audience is," Reuter concludes. "Brands also need to know how users access their site—their browsing and search habits. Online customers experience sites differently depending on whether they use a smartphone or tablet. This means smaller companies need to develop different strategies for tablets and smartphones."
