United By Blue’s Internship Program: Recruiting Without Resumes

The sustainable apparel and accessories company that removes a pound of trash from oceans and waterways for every product sold is also committed to teaching future social entrepreneurs about business through their internship program. Recruiting for the fall semester program has begun, and interns can apply without having to submit a resume.

United By Blue (UBB), the industry leader in ocean friendly apparel, is recruiting its next round of interns—and the company is doing so without resumes.

“After a few rounds of recruiting for our internship program with the standard cover letter and resume, we realized that it was hard for us to get to know our candidates based on their resumes. Cover letters told us a lot more about our candidates,” says Alli Blum, UBB’s Director of Marketing and Internship Coordinator. "So we just decided to leave resumes out of the recruiting process."

And refusing resumes is just the beginning of the UBB internship experience. From day one, the company begins teaching its interns not just about how to grow a sustainable business, but about the Blue Movement. “This company is founded on the basis of doing what we can to heal the world’s oceans, and we hope that UBB interns graduate not just ready to take on more responsibility in the workplace, but ready to be lifelong advocates of the Blue Movement,” says Blum.

A Special Experience

Foosball table? Check. Dartboard? You betcha. Opportunity to conceive of and pursue a project that makes you excited—within the first few weeks of the program? That’s the best part. UBB interns aren’t just an afterthought—they’re full-fledged teammates.

“My original goal in life was to become a schoolteacher, and teaching is something that I’ve always been passionate about,” says Brian Linton, the company’s Founder and Chief Trash Collector. Interns work alongside Linton at UBB in the company’s Philadelphia open-floor plan office, and the chain of command is a two-way street. Not only do interns have access to company leadership, but company leadership appreciates having access to them. “Many of our most successful projects have been conceived of and developed by interns, and we learn from them as much as they learn from us,” says Linton.

“Another critical part of the program is the exit interview process. It’s an opportunity for the interns to get feedback on their performance, and for us to learn how we can improve the program. We had a really strong summer class, and we’re looking forward to incorporating their feedback into future programs,” says Blum.

Finding a Niche

Though the green revolution may be in full force, a large percentage of the so-called green jobs still require industry and engineering experience. For the humanities student with a passion for the environment, building a career path in the green sector can be a tough path to navigate. United By Blue is a unique company in that it brings organic, ocean-friendly fashion and ocean and waterway cleanups together to create an entirely new type of social business.

“It’s a great place for students looking to break into the green space while still pursuing a career path specific to their interests,” says Mike Cangi, UBB’s Director of Cleanups. UBB welcomes students from all backgrounds to fill a wide variety of positions, from graphic design to cleanup planning, from copywriting to business development.

How to Apply

Internships are available to current college juniors or seniors and recent graduates in an array of disciplines. A background in a student's position of choice is helpful, but the company values an entrepreneurial mindset, strong follow-through skills, and a high level of emotional intelligence above all else.
