“We believe that Line2 Version 3.0 will be extremely popular with consumers. We added unlimited SMS and removed business features that consumers didn’t need, allowing us to lower the price to just $9.95/month and broaden Line2’s appeal.”
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 1, 2010
Toktumi, Inc., the company behind the popular calling app Line2, announced today that the SMS-enabled version of Line2, Version 3.0, has been approved by Apple and is now available on iTunes to new and existing customers. Line2 Version 3.0 becomes the first VoIP app to feature carrier-grade SMS texting, allowing customers to exchange unlimited text messages with any SMS-enabled phone on any carrier. The result is a texting experience that is identical to traditional SMS offered by the major cellular carriers. Unlike texting-only applications for the iPhone, Line2 combines VoIP calling capabilities and carrier-grade texting in one app, so that customers can use one number for both types of communication. There is no other calling app available on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch that offers this.
Line2 customers get unlimited calling and unlimited SMS texting for less than half the cost of the $20.00/month that AT&T charges iPhone users for unlimited texting alone. When you add in the savings achieved by dropping to the lowest AT&T calling plan and using Line2 over WiFi for voice calls, customers can reduce their cell phone bill by as much as $50 per month.
“We believe that Line2 Version 3.0 will be extremely popular with consumers. We added unlimited SMS and removed business features that consumers didn’t need, allowing us to lower the price to just $9.95/month and broaden Line2’s appeal,” said Peter Sisson, Founder and CEO of Toktumi. Sisson added, “We still provide our business customers a full-featured version of Line2 with all of the features of the prior version, plus unlimited SMS, for $14.95/month. I use Line2 on my iPhone as my business number, so I have two numbers on one phone, each with its own voicemail, caller ID, and contacts. Now that we’ve added texting, its even more useful.”
Version 3.0 is an even bigger breakthrough for iPod Touch and iPad users, Line2 turns either device into a WiFi mobile phone with all the features of a traditional cell phone for just $9.95/month. For people with regular access to WiFi networks, you now have a viable alternative to a cell phone for a fraction of the cost.
“For the first time, Apple’s new iPods offer built-in microphones,” says Sisson. “Using Line2 on a new iPod touch is just like using an iPhone. No other app brings phone-number based voice calling, carrier-grade texting, and advanced features like call waiting and conferencing to iPods and iPads. This is absolutely an industry first. Customers won’t miss calls because they can be forwarded to another phone or sent to voicemail if the device isn’t connected to WiFi.”
Although there have been a number of third-party Google Voice apps released recently, none of them offer the features and functionality of Line2. These apps do not support VoIP calling and will not allow you to place VoIP calls over WiFi or 3G data networks. Google Voice apps use a call-back approach to place calls, in which the user enters the calling number and is called back using minutes from the caller’s AT&T voice plan. Line2, when calling over WiFi or 3G data networks, does not use cellular minutes, allowing callers to reduce their cellular bill or use their phone where they don’t have cell reception. The Google Voice apps cannot be used for calls on iPods or iPads because those devices lack cellular voice connections. Finally, Line2 supports both push notifications and multi-tasking, allowing customers to use other apps, browse the Internet, or listen to music while still receiving calls and texts. The Google Voice apps do not support this - the app must be open to receive a text.
More about Line2:
Line2 is the first and only truly dual-mode VoIP/cellular calling app for the iPhone, meaning that among other features, customers can place and receive calls over WiFi or over cellular using the same number. If WiFi isn’t available, Line2 will use the cellular network to place or receive the call. Customers also have the option of placing VoIP calls over the 3G data network, allowing them to avoid cellular minute charges while still having complete mobility. The application detects the best available network based on customer preferences and places and receives calls over that network automatically.
Line2 is also one of the few VoIP apps that features true multi-tasking support on Apple's iOS4. This means customers can receive calls on their Line2 number even when they are running other apps, browsing the web, or listening to music. Line2 customers can be sure to never miss a call, even if they don’t have cell reception.
Line2’s WiFi capabilities allow international travelers to place and receive calls while overseas without incurring voice or data roaming charges. Using Line2, calls to any number back home will be free, as will calls to other Line2 users, wherever they are worldwide. Calls to international numbers start at $0.02 per minute, whether calling from home or abroad. Line2’s WiFi call quality is also better than traditional cellular quality, and WiFi calls between two Line2 customers use 16-kHz HD audio for crystal clear sound quality that is stunning to experience.
Line2 is a free download that comes with 30 days of free service. After that, service costs just $9.95/month for unlimited US/Canada calling and texting.
Also available is Toktumi Unlimited which comes with all of the features of Line2 plus business PBX features like auto-attendant ("Press 1 for..."), call screening, caller-specific call forwarding, after-hours settings, and Mac/PC-based calling for just $14.95/month.
