Diabetes is one of the most common causes of vision loss and blindness among adults in the United States. Because of this, it is extremely important that people with diabetes have regular eye exams.

This summer, retina specialist Heeral Shah, M.D., joined Updegraff Vision, an ophthalmology practice established by LASIK pioneer and refractive surgeon Stephen Updegraff, M.D., F.A.C.S. On September 10, Dr. Shah will further introduce herself to the local community as she performs free diabetic eye exams in Updegraff Vision’s Tampa office.

Diabetes is one of the most common causes of vision loss and blindness among adults in the United States. Because of this, Dr. Shah says, it is extremely important that people with diabetes have regular eye exams.

“Diabetes can cause damage to blood vessels throughout the body,” says Dr. Shah. “When this occurs in the eye, the blood vessels in the retina are weakened, which can result in bleeding and loss of vision. Fortunately, this damage” – which is called diabetic retinopathy – “can be diagnosed and, if necessary, treated to maintain vision.”

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that patients with Type 2 diabetes have a dilated eye exam immediately after diagnosis, and that those with Type 1 diabetes have their first eye exam three to five years after diagnosis. After their initial dilated exam, Dr. Shah says, patients with both types of diabetes should continue to have eye exams annually.

Dr. Shah earned her medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, and completed her ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine. In addition, she has received fellowship training in medical retina at the New England Eye Center.

Dr. Shah is offering free diabetic eye exams on Saturday, September 10, from 10 AM to 2 PM. They will take place in Updegraff Vision’s Tampa office, which is located at 13321 North 56th Street. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-serve basis; walk-ins are also welcome, but space is limited.
