If you listen closely, a faint “HO-HO-HO!” can be heard in the wind. While planning is underway for the traditional Uptown Houston Holiday Lighting, new traditions are being introduced. Facebook users are invited to participate in the “Show us your Uptown Holiday Spirit” Facebook photo contest. One lucky family will be on stage with Santa Claus as he lights up Post Oak Boulevard Thanksgiving evening to mark the start of the holiday season. The winner will also receive a souvenir framed photo of the event.

Beginning October 22 until October 26, Facebook users can upload their favorite Holiday Lighting event photo on the Uptown Houston Facebook page. Public voting on Facebook will take place from October 29 to November 2. Judges will choose a winner from the top five photos receiving the most votes. The winning photo will be announced November 13 on Uptown Houston’s Facebook page.

“Joining Santa onstage to light Post Oak Boulevard and witness the spectacular fireworks extravaganza is an experience not to be forgotten,” said Uptown Houston President John Breeding. “We encourage everyone to participate.”

The 27th Annual Uptown Houston Holiday Lighting will take place Thanksgiving evening, November 22, 2012. This FREE family event begins at 4 p.m., and features festive music by local groups, including the Houston Concert Band, Salvation Army Harbor Light Choir, Houston Choral Showcase, Houston Children’s Chorus and more. Santa Clause will arrive on stage to light the half-million twinkling lights on the Boulevard and the Houston skies with the grand fireworks extravaganza.

“The Uptown Houston Holiday Lighting is a tradition passed on through the generations,” said Breeding. “We have individuals who were brought here when they were children. Now they are bringing their own children to the event. There truly is no better way bring the community together to kick-off the holiday season.”

A percentage of concession sales will benefit Be An Angel, a nonprofit organization serving children with multiple disabilities, and the Houston Area Urban League, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged people secure economic self-reliance, power and civil rights.
