We have distributed books from Thriftbooks.com to over 200 small community libraries damaged by Cyclone Nargis in 2008, and also helped a number of educational institutions recover from years of financial distress
AUBURN, Wash. (Vocus/PRWEB) December 13, 2010
This December, Thrift Books reached a milestone—it donated its one-millionth book to charity. Since early 2009, Thrift Books has been donating used books to charities in support of fighting worldwide illiteracy. Today, through the efforts of Thrift Books and its not-for-profit literacy partners, one million books have been donated and distributed to countries in Africa and Asia, including Mozambique, Nigeria, the Gambia and Burma.
“Books are a necessary and valuable resource for the fight against illiteracy. We firmly believe that worldwide literacy can be furthered by making books accessible to those who generally do not have reading materials,” said Hector Rivas, Thrift Books’ CEO. “Thrift Books has been fortunate to work with dedicated professionals who have an informed knowledge of the educational needs of populations worldwide.”
Thrift Books has partnered with Nargis Library Recovery/Myanmar Book Aid & Preservation Foundation, Wings of the Dawn International Institute for Children, Books for Africa and World Vision to ensure that its donated books are distributed to those in need.
"We have distributed books from Thriftbooks.com to over 200 small community libraries damaged by Cyclone Nargis in 2008, and also helped a number of educational institutions recover from years of financial distress,” said Dr. John Bagley, executive director of Nargis Library Recovery. “In each library, local leaders and librarians administer their programs and express enthusiasm for our support. We are the country's largest provider of children's books. While other donors contribute cash and in-kind support, Thrift Books continues to sustain our effort with their huge book contributions."
Since its start in 2003 in a small storage unit in Kirkland, Washington, Thrift Books has become the largest online bookseller of cheap used books in the United States.
