A recent study by online ad network Chitika validates what many already know: web sites at the bottom of a search page do not get as much visibility as those at the top of the page. According to the data, a web site with the first position in Google search results captures 33% of all traffic, compared to 18% for the second position and only 3.5% for the seventh listing. That said, according to Iaboni, it’s important to rank on the first page of any Google search. Brands that turn up on the first page of a Google search receive 91.5% of all traffic compared to just 4.8% of brands on page two and 1.1% of brands on page three. On top of that, traffic dropped by 140% going from the last position on the first page of Google to the first position of the second page. “Everyone knows that being the number one result on a Google search results page is important,” Iaboni adds. “These results further illustrate how big of an advantage brands have over the competitors listed below them.”
Smaller brands can still show up at the top of a Google search result, because ranking is based on SEO strategies, not the size of a company. To rank higher on search engines and attract local traffic, Iaboni explains, smaller businesses need to use keywords that emphasize their practice. In addition to telling people what services they provide, it’s also important to consider region-specific keywords. Smaller brands that want to increase their visibility also need to create original content that is engaging and that users want to engage with and share, says Iaboni.
