There is still a major shortage of nurses in BC

With more than 50% of Canada’s Licensed Practical Nurses over the age of 45, well-trained health care professionals continue to be in high demand. Recognizing the need for quick, efficient training programs, Vancouver Career College is now offering multiple start dates for their Practical Nursing program.

September offers students two opportunities to attend Vancouver Career College’s popular nurse training program, with classes starting at its Burnaby and Abbotsford campuses. For those who need more time to get ready to head back to school, there will also be start dates in Kelowna, Burnaby and Abbotsford in January 2010.

“There is still a major shortage of nurses in BC,” says Vancouver Career College Practical Nursing Registrar, Rodney King. “The Practical Nursing program only takes one year to complete, so students can be working in the field very quickly.”

The nursing industry has also been traditionally dominated by women, but as the workforce prepares for retirement, the demographics in nursing are changing as well.

“As the industry changes, there are more males entering into the field,” said King. “Nursing is a physically demanding job, so men are often well-suited to the profession.”

The 52-week Practical Nursing program at Vancouver Career College trains students in a variety of areas, building a skill set that will be transferable to health care careers in hospitals, private clinics and nursing homes. Students also take part in multiple practicum placements, properly preparing them for their entry into the workforce. More information about the program can be found at
