Their placement on the Colorado Growth Model, is a great honor and one that we are happy to be a part in helping them achieve
Denver, CO (Vocus) October 21, 2010
Students at the Dual Language Montessori School in Denver Public Schools have something new to boast about this school year, as they gain recognition as one of the top 20 schools in Denver Public Schools on the Colorado Growth Model. The Colorado Growth Model is a measure used by the Colorado Department of Education for growth on CSAP in the areas of Reading, Writing and Math. This is an important distinction for Academia Ana Marie Sandoval, a DPS magnet school comprised of a high percentage of English Language Learner (ELL) students. A recipient of nearly $4,000 in educational grant funding from Vantage Learning, Academia Ana Marie Sandoval was able to purchase licenses for Vantage’s signature writing program, MY Access!, fueling their growth and achievements in writing proficiency on the state exams this year.
In this time of decreasing budgets in schools, the grant from Vantage could not have come at a better time. Comprised of nearly 45 percent Hispanic and 55 percent Caucasian students, Academia Ana Marie Sandoval was able to meet the writing needs of their students in a way they never had before because of the targeted feedback provided by MY Access!
“Our performance on the Colorado Growth Model is a testament to the tremendous teaching staff and tools we have implemented within our school and the strides we are making in writing,” says JoAnn Trujillo-Hays, Principal of Academia Ana Marie Sandoval. “This year we saw significant growth in terms of our students moving from ‘Unsatisfactory’ to ‘Partially Proficient’, ‘Partially Proficient’ to ‘Proficient’ and ‘Proficient’ to ‘Advanced’ in writing.
Other distinctions achieved this year by Academia Ana Marie Sandoval include:
- Elimination of the number of Unsatisfactory scores in 3rd and 5th grade.
- A drop in the number of 4th grade students receiving ‘Unsatisfactory’ scores from 22 percent to 6 percent.
- A drop in the number of 6th grade students receiving ‘Unsatisfactory’ from 16 percent to 4 percent, a significant accomplishment.
“We are incredibly excited to see the way in which students at Academia Ana Marie Sandoval have benefited from consistently using MY Access!,” says Dave Hewes, Vice President of Vantage Learning. “Their placement on the Colorado Growth Model, is a great honor and one that we are happy to be a part in helping them achieve,” adds Hewes of Vantage. MY Access! allows students to respond to online prompts and receive immediate feedback on areas such as core, meaning and focus and is accessible through any computer with an internet connection, further allowing students to continue their writing practice even outside of the classroom. The program is currently used by over a million students nationwide and is throughout numerous schools in Denver Public Schools education system.
