Teachers, students and administrators at Avalon High School are starting the school year on a high note. The continuation school is celebrating high scores for tenth graders on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) as well as other incoming 11th and 12th grade students who did not pass at their previous school. Avalon HS; which helps 16-19 year old students who have fallen behind on credits, previously dropped out, or are English Language Learners (ELL), attributes their consistent improvements to a fantastic teaching staff and the implementation of core learning tools, such as Vantage Learning's MY Access!.
MY Access!, serves as an online learning program that instantly analyzes over 350 semantic, syntactic, and discourse characteristics; and scores students in areas such as focus, meaning, organization, content, development, language use and style, mechanics, conventions, and overall writing proficiency. For Avalon, MY Access! has been a critical piece in helping at risk students as well as ELL students build their literacy skills and not only pass but score at a proficient level or higher on the CAHSEE. The program pushes students and motivates them to submit more writing assignments with instantaneous feedback allowing Avalon to boast a passing score of 2.0 or above for all students on the English portion of the California Exit Exam.
“Our students are an incredibly unique group that benefit most from the extra engagement and feedback that comes from programs like MY Access!,” says Regina Awtry, Principal of Avalon High School. “Avalon’s students depend on the opportunities provided at a continuation school and I have seen firsthand substantial English proficiency progress within our students, specifically our ELL students. Today, our graduation rates have doubled and tripled as a result of these tools and our tremendous teaching staff,” continues Awtry.
Students at Avalon High School were also the recipients of a LAUSD grant through its ITD Branch allowing them to each use netbooks and further implement MY Access! into their curriculum. Teachers at Avalon not only use the online learning program within their English classes but also in social studies & other core classes in an effort to bring the program across the curriculum. The results speak for themselves as students continue to make huge strides on their California High School Exit Examinations (CAHSEE) and distinguish themselves as a leading continuation school in LAUSD. Avalon High School has been using MY Access! for four years and plans to continue implementation in their curriculum.
