The industry and the level of talent here are growing every day

Judging from the recent announcement of major expansion plans at Vancouver Film Studios, Vancouver’s film industry is still very much alive. Two recent major box office successes prominently featured the work of numerous Vancouver-based or locally-trained visual effects artists and a full slate of films currently in production in the Lower Mainland has created increased interest in local talent. Now, anyone looking to enter the visual effects and CGI industry has an affordable training option with the 3D Modelling, Animation Art and Design at VCAD.

“The industry and the level of talent here are growing every day,” says Alex Greenberg, Post Production Supervisor at Bear Studios. “I think Vancouver is very close to being the centre of the world for the CGI industry.”

Greenberg is an accomplished 3D Modeler with several years experience in the CGI industry for television, music video and commercial production. He also serves as an industry advisor for VCAD’s 3D Modelling, Animation Art and Design program ( Students in the program learn the tools and develop the skills to succeed in the visual effects, game design and animation industries. By conclusion of the diploma program, graduates will be prepared to take advantage of jobs opening up in computer animation studios, game development companies, post-production and special effects studios.

With major production companies working on films in the city, the industry continues to grow. This growth, Greenberg insists, looks extremely promising for Vancouver’s special effects professionals.

“Film companies know that there’s a lot of talent in this town which brings more work to us and opens new VFX houses,” says Greenberg. “The proof is in the latest movies that were done here in our back yard.”

VCAD is currently accepting applications for its career program in 3D Modelling, Animation Art and Design. The next round of programs starts on October 5, 2009. For more information, visit
