Vertrue Incorporated, a leading consumer services marketing company, thinks there's a lot to be said for keeping employees healthy -- both financially and physically. While overall financial health across America lately has surely seen better days, employees' physical health can get a quick boost from a well-run health fair. Vertrue has run several successful health fairs in recent years, and it wants to share its recipes for employee wellness.
In an economy where the mantra is "Do more with less," it pays to keep employees as healthy as possible. With cutbacks, layoffs, and overall budget trimming very prevalent right now, reducing employee sick days can only help the bottom line. That's why Vertrue believes other companies out there should consider organizing and holding health fairs; companies with healthy and motivated employees may stand a much better chance of fighting through tough economic times.
-- Take a shot at it. Rampant colds and flu can damage company productivity, not to mention employee morale. That's partly why offering free or low-cost vaccinations to employees (and even their children and other immediate family members) is fast becoming commonplace. Offering flu shots to company employees could be one way to send a powerful message: The organization's overall wellness depends largely on its people.
-- And the survey says … One way to keep employees motivated and on their game is to offer free health screenings and exercise advice. A well-executed health fair can not only let employees know they're valued, it can also clue them in on what it'll take to get in shape, get back in shape, or simply tone up.
-- This is only a test. Today's crazy schedules can make it tough for working people to get to the doctor for a regular check-up. So why not bring the doctor's office to them? An in-office health fair that includes qualified people to take blood pressure readings, check pulse rates and resting heart rates, and even check body fat percentages, could become a convenient company perk.
-- Eat, drink, and be social. Offering employees (free) healthy snacks and refreshing beverages can accomplish two things: It'll give the staff a break from the grind to unwind a bit. It'll also provide some social interaction. In tough economic times, when company events are being severely cut back, a health fair is a great way to mix business with pleasure -- without ever having to leave the office.
Remembering these timely tips could make for a happy and healthier work environment, suggests Vertrue.
