Viable, Inc., a deaf-owned and deaf-operated provider of video interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing people, has been approved to provide continuing education units through the Certification Maintenance Program established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). As a CMP provider, Viable will be better able to create opportunities that will help staff sign language interpreters maintain their professional certification.
Viable employs more than a hundred staff interpreters who provide video relay services (VRS), which enables American Sign Language speakers who are deaf or hard of hearing to make telephone calls via video connection with a Video Interpreter (VI), who will interpret their telephone conversation.

The mechanics required to effectively interpret VRS calls evolve along with trends and technology, making professional development a critical component of service delivery and customer satisfaction at Viable."
Interpreters intending to maintain RID certification -- the national standard - are required to earn a minimum of 80 contact hours during each four-year certification maintenance cycle. In 2009, Viable opened and filled two full-time staff positions dedicated to professional development and mentorship, and will continue to provide workshops given by national experts. All Viable workshops open to the public that provide CEUs are listed on the searchable RID workshop database, although Viable employees are able to attend for free or at cost savings.

Viable interpreters will be able to count their attendance to in-house workshops, the employee mentorship program, and other homegrown professional development initiatives toward the fulfillment of their CMP requirements.
Viable will also launch video remote interpreting services (VRI) in the second half of 2009, which will be staffed only by certified VIs. VRI differs from VRS in that the deaf or hard of hearing party and the hearing party are physically face-to-face while the VI is accessed through videoconferencing technology.
