These handmade posters are full of old-timey charm, and we’re excited to add them to our product lineup just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Old Tom Foolery, maker of “unsappy, uncrappy cards and curiosities,” has released a new series of old-time posters called “Words of Wisdom, circa 1891.” The ironic, funny posters were created from actual text and illustrations found in an instructional book that dates back to 1891.

“We stumbled upon this wonderful old book at an antique shop way up in northern Minnesota, and immediately knew it was our civic duty to share its ‘wisdom’ with the modern world,” said Old Tom Foolery Co-Owner Lauren Gryniewski. “These handmade posters are full of old-timey charm, and we’re excited to add them to our product lineup just in time for the holiday shopping season.”

The screen-printed posters contain outdated advice that’s often funny without trying to be. For example, a poster titled “How to Write” features such amusing instructions as “Keep both feet on the floor,” and “Hold the pen firmly, but not so tightly as to cramp the fingers.”

Another poster, titled “How to Apply for a Situation,” urges jobseekers to “Put on your best clothes, see that they are neatly brushed, that your linen is faultless, your boots blacked, your hands and face clean, and your finger-nails properly trimmed.”

“With their humorous historical language and intricate illustrations, these vintage reproductions will bring instant character to any home or office,” added Old Tom Foolery Co-Owner Joel Gryniewski. “They’re like motivational posters before motivational posters ever existed.”

The “Words of Wisdom, circa 1891” series consists of eight different posters, each screen-printed with black ink on rich khaki-colored paper. The posters come in one of four sizes: 8x10”, 12x12”, 11x17” or 18x24". Prices range from $16 to $24 depending on the size, and wholesale pricing is also available. All posters are sold unframed.
