NRCS Chooses ShoreGuard Vinyl Sheet Pile for Acid Mine Drainage Cleanup on Indian Creek, PA

After years of studies, water monitoring and design, the $ 3.5 million Anna and Steve Gdosky Indian Creek Restoration Project is underway.

Atlanta, GA (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 31, 2007 -- The water in Indian creek is bright orange in color from the heavy amounts of iron discharge that flows from the old Melcroft No. 1 mine. The problem has long been a concern for residents in the area. After years of studies, water monitoring and design, the $ 3.5 million Anna and Steve Gdosky Indian Creek Restoration Project is underway.

The cleanup is a cooperation of community members, the Mountain Watershed Association, the state Department of Environmental Protection and the state Natural Resources Conservation Service. The project will utilize a design developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the state NRCS.

Stoy Excavating, of Somerset, PA will construct five ponds using ShoreGuard vinyl sheet piling. As mine water enters the first two settling ponds the iron mixes with oxygen. The next two ponds contain limestone to remove the acid from the water. Pond five will capture any remaining metals that are in the water then it will flow through a wetland before entering Indian creek.

Like many other government agencies, the NRCS chose ShoreGuard because it is an inert material that will not rust, rot, corrode or decay. Jim Stoy of Stoy Excavating is eager to use the material because it is light weight and easy to install helping lower the cost of the project.

"With only a few more mine drainage sites to tackle in the coming years, we can restore the Indian Creek watershed by 95 percent," said Beverly Braverman, director of the Mountain watershed Association.
