Richmond, VA (PRWEB) April 21, 2012
The Virginia car accident attorneys of Marks & Harrison announced their support today for the Governors Highway Safety Association’s call for more aggressive law enforcement and educational campaigns to cut down on speeding-related accidents and injuries.
“Despite progress in nearly every other area of highway safety, speeding continues to be a factor in approximately one third of traffic deaths every year,” the GHSA said in a recent news release announcing the group’s report on nationwide speeding.
Speeding-related crashes in the U.S. and Puerto Rico accounted for 31 percent of all traffic deaths in 2010, a seven percent increase since 2000, the GHSA said. During that same decade, motor vehicle fatalities attributed to not using seatbelts dropped 23 percent. Alcohol-impaired traffic deaths declined three percent.
Seven states, including Virginia, have increased speed limits “despite research showing that an increase in traffic deaths was attributable to raised speed limits on all road types after the 1995 repeal of federal speed limits,” the GHSA said. Virginia increased the maximum speed limit on its roads to 70 mph from 65 mph in 2010.
Marks & Harrison, a 100-year-old Richmond personal injury law firm that pursues wrongful death claims and personal injury lawsuits on behalf of automobile accident victims, says its investigations of car accident deaths indicate that speeding is prominent among the types of reckless driving that lead to serious injury and death.
The Marks & Harrison firm says it endorses the GHSA’s recommendations that each state should:
- Explore addressing speeding problems through aggressive driving enforcement, since the public considers aggressive driving a more serious threat to safety.
- Target speed enforcement in school and work zones, because this approach has a higher degree of public support and is largely non-controversial.
Marks & Harrison said it also supports the GHSA recommendations that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) support a nationwide law enforcement campaign and public awareness efforts to address speeding and aggressive driving.
The car accident lawyers of Mark & Harrison believe that individuals injured in car accidents attributed to speeding should take steps to hold reckless drivers accountable. The firm also believes injured drivers and their families deserve compensation for their losses. The firm encourages victims and families to contact a Virginia car accident attorney to learn more about their legal rights and options.
