Advanced Web, a leading Virginia web hosting firm, was recently notified that a data center in which they had maintained server systems and network equipment for over a decade would soon be closing. The company devised and successfully executed a plan to quickly migrate the majority of its customer base to new systems while enhancing its capability to provide best-in-class service.
When Advanced Web was informed that the data center they had been using to power online operations for a majority of their clients was set to close in just weeks, their Director of Operations, Brad Caricofe, developed a plan to migrate their mission-critical systems to better infrastructure, within a short timeframe.
“We had already planned on overhauling much of our web hosting and dedicated server architecture in early 2013. The decision by Softlayer to abruptly close the data center meant that we had to implement our loosely formed plan immediately,” said Caricofe.
Advanced Web’s management team and technical staff purchased new Dell R310 and R610 servers that were placed in a well-connected Northern Virginia data center. “The most difficult part of this process was the timeframe that was thrust upon us. This unexpected move came during a period when we were already inundated with large projects and had little spare time to squeeze from our technical staff,” said Caricofe.
The company claims that their existing disaster recovery planning protocols also assisted with their ability to migrate customer data quickly. “Our operating principles had already given us the capability to recover our systems from massive catastrophe, such as losing a datacenter to fire or weather-related events, within 24 hours. We applied some of what we’d learned in the past while planning for the unknown, to ensure that we could move everything within the requested amount of time,” said Caricofe.
Advanced Web claims that their clients now benefit from a faster and more stable network, and greater systems redundancy. “We spent far more money than we intended to with our planned upgrade in 2013, however, we’re extremely happy with the results. Our clients are on cutting-edge hardware and systems that are running the latest distributions of Linux. Everything has been professionally engineered by our senior staff who include former employees of companies like Red Hat and Verisign,” said Caricofe.
