Within the next five years, phone service in America will change for the better. More and more traditional providers will transition away from the outdated public switched telephone network (PSTN) behind analog telephone technology, to cheaper alternatives. According to VoIP expert Rachel Greenberg, one of the more popular options for cheap phone service is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a relatively new technology that uses the Internet to transmit calls.
Last June, the Voice Communication Exchange Committee selected June 15, 2018 as the date that the full transition away from the PSTN will be complete. However, with that date nearly 5 years away, many might want to adopt VoIP now while competition is high and prices are very low. And so, My VoIP Provider has revealed 4 reasons to choose VoIP now for big savings.
1. Save Money with Cheap Phone Service
When compared to traditional service providers, rates on VoIP services are much cheaper. Traditional phone service rates typically fall in the $20 to $40 a month range, while VoIP service typically costs between $10 and $20 a month. But, if a subscriber is willing to prepay for a 2 year plan, VoIP can average out to a very low $4.99/month. Granted, the subscriber has to pay $119.76 upfront, but that is likely more attractive than the $960 spread out over 24 months that customers will have to pay with traditional telecoms.
2. Save Money on Long Distance Calls with VoIP
It is expensive for traditional providers to send calls long distance. Analog phone technology is very limited in how providers can send phone calls, and transfers may be slow and costly. As a result, traditional providers have to charge high per minute fees for each time of calling: local, long distance, service area, etc.
Since VoIP uses the Internet, not the PSTN to make calls, most top VoIP providers don’t charge extra for long distance. It doesn’t matter if the call travels across the street or across the country, there is no per-minute fee, just a low monthly fee for unlimited calling.
3. Save Money on International Calls with VoIP
Traditional providers can charge as much as $3/minute for international calls. International calls with most residential VoIP providers, on the other hand, either carry a very low rate, as low as $0.01/minute, or no charge at all. Some providers also offer a free 60 minutes for international calling every month.
Those providers that offer unlimited international calling usually have a pre-selected list of countries that subscribers can call without any per-minute charges. China, India, and Australia are among the more popular destinations in the unlimited international calling category.
4. Avoid High Taxes with VoIP
With traditional service, taxes can be as high as 23% on monthly plans in some areas, but rates are around 16% on average. So, a bill for a $35.99/month plan will actually have an additional $6 worth of taxes included.
With VoIP, however, tax rates can be as low as 3%. In some cases, taxes associated with VoIP can be less than $1. This means that customers see much lower tax rates on their monthly bills. Customers may not always be aware of how much they are paying in taxes on their phone bills with traditional providers, but that lack of awareness can add up to lots of money in unnecessary spending.
