Architect magazine has named DryJoist as one of the 13 winners in their third annual R+D Awards. The program recognizes the best in research and development in architectural technology as it relates to building sciences. DryJoist and DryJoist EZ, the company's newest product, are wood deck joist alternatives made from marine-grade aluminum that lasts a lifetime and provides drainage to protect the space below the deck and the supporting deck structure from the elements, substantially extending the life of the entire deck.

Architect magazine has named DryJoist as one of the 13 winners in their third annual R+D Awards. The program recognizes the best in research and development in architectural technology as it relates to building sciences.

"We couldn't be more excited about this recognition. There has been a tremendous focus in recent years on developing long lasting, low-maintenance decking, however, the framing system of a deck has traditionally been overlooked," said Jon Bailey, Vice President of Wahoo Decks. DryJoist and the company's newest product, DryJoist EZ, are wood joist alternatives made from marine-grade aluminum that last a lifetime and provide drainage to protect the space below the deck and the supporting deck structure from the elements, substantially extending the life of the entire deck.

Traditional wood framing systems are vulnerable to rot, decay, insects and fire and do nothing to protect the space below an elevated deck from water exposure. DryJoist and DryJoist EZ replace much of this framework but are immune to these drawbacks and offer additional benefits - providing a 100% waterproof space beneath a deck and creating a finished ceiling underneath - all in one step.    45% of the aluminum used in DryJoist and DryJoist EZ is recycled from post-consumer and post-industrial scrap, meaning it qualifies for LEED credits and creates a sustainable solution as aluminum is fully and repeatedly recyclable.

"With DryJoist and DryJoist EZ we have pioneered a new, better, sustainable way of building in a segment that hasn't been improved upon for many years," said Bailey. "Architects, engineers and specifiers are embracing this new concept and it's exciting to see a panel of their peers award DryJoist with this distinguished honor."

This year's jury was comprised of John Ronan, the founder of John Ronan Architects in Chicago, Craig Hodgetts, the co-founder of Hodgetts + Fung Design and Architecture in Los Angeles and Lauren Crahan, a partner at Freecell, a design and fabrication practice in Brooklyn, NY.
