A skilled and experienced drunk-driving defense lawyer can help you from the very start and drastically improve the odds of keeping your criminal and driving records clean and limiting the consequences you face.

Drivers charged with driving while impaired (DWI) during the recent “Booze It & Lose It” campaign should seek legal help right away, Wake County DWI / DUI defense lawyer David Coolidge said today.

According to Coolidge, an aggressive defense can help to protect the DWI defendant’s rights and to avoid or mitigate the serious penalties the defendant faces under North Carolina’s drunk-driving laws.

“Time is of the essence with a drunk-driving charge,” said Coolidge, the founder of the Raleigh criminal defense law firm, The Coolidge Law Firm, which represents people throughout Wake County and surrounding areas, including college students, who have been charged with DWI / DUI and other criminal and traffic violations.

“A skilled and experienced drunk-driving defense lawyer can help you from the very start and drastically improve the odds of keeping your criminal and driving records clean and limiting the consequences you face,” he said.

According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, state and local law enforcement officers cited 3,627 motorists for driving while impaired (DWI) and issued a total of 136,769 traffic and criminal citations statewide from December 3 to January 2 during the Booze It & Lose It campaign.

In Wake County alone, there were 80 DWI citations among 992 total criminal arrests during the campaign, the GHSP said. There were 2,187 other traffic citations issued.

According to Coolidge, any driver charged with DWI in North Carolina faces:

  •     Loss of their driver’s license
  •     Loss of their vehicle
  •     Fines
  •     Jail time
  •     Ignition interlock devices
  •     Other possible penalties.

“Being charged with impaired driving can be a very difficult and confusing experience,” Coolidge said. “That’s why it’s important to seek the assistance of a knowledgeable DWI / DUI defense attorney who will work hard to navigate your case through the process and communicate closely with you at every step along the way.

According to Coolidge, a person charged with DWI may be able to challenge the validity of the traffic stop (including checkpoint stops) as well as any chemical, blood or field sobriety tests that were administered.

He also pointed out that his firm’s DWI / DUI defense attorneys regularly work with known and trusted DWI expert Doug Scott, a 27-year law enforcement veteran and former Commander of the Cary Police Department’s traffic safety program, who can assist in analyzing the weaknesses in the prosecution’s case.

“Our goal in every case is to deliver the best result possible, including dismissal, plea bargain or a not-guilty verdict in a bench or jury trial,” Coolidge said.
