After spending about fifteen years in the long term care field working with the elderly as a social worker, activity director and nursing home administrator, Mary M. Harroun, MS, LNHA, realized that the elderly needed special equipment, and in 1990, the wheelchair and basic walker were the only choices available to them. Harroun wanted to increase their functional mobility safely, stating that all elderly people walked once and that they should be given the right and the correct equipment to assist them in walking again.

“This company is helping to change the culture and ideology of the entire long term care and resident-care communities by helping to improve independent ambulation potential and by proving the positive benefits and overall improvement."

Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has joined in collaboration with the Merry Walker Corporation to offer ambulation devices and walkers to a larger consumer market. Established and incorporated in Mundelein, Illinois in 1990, the Merry Walker Corporation is a certified woman-owned business with all of their products manufactured in the USA.

Her first invention, the Merry Walker® Ambulation Device which launched the Merry Walker Corporation, was constructed of white PVC tubing. It was soon discovered that PVC was not going to be the favored material for this product due to its lack of sustaining outside stress; when a user sat down hard on the suspended seat, the PVC would crack and break. The Merry Walker was redesigned in 1993 with a second patent to include the tubular steel design that makes the Merry Walker what it is today; the most preferred ambulatory walker in the marketplace, rated among end users as the safest durable medical equipment produced in the USA. Harroun and her specialized team have gone on to design other popular and efficacious ambulation solutions for the aging population including the Merry Motivator®, the The Merry Cart®, the Merry Therapeutic Cane®, the Merry Therapeutic Walker®, the
Merry Stand By Me®, and the Merry Seat Yourself™. All of their product designs focus on the goal of getting the elderly out of wheelchairs and restoring these folks to the highest level of functional mobility that is possible.

“We are proud to introduce the Merry Walker Corporation products to more consumers,” said Hulet Smith, Founder and CEO of Rehabmart. “This company is helping to change the culture and ideology of the entire long term care and resident-care communities by helping to improve independent ambulation potential and by proving the positive benefits and overall improvement of patients who move and walk more. Their products help to get many wheelchair-bound patients up and walking again, which will in turn greatly enhance their quality of life.”
