Union, Washington (PRWEB) June 05, 2013
Much like the lavish gatherings held by Jay Gatsby in the Roaring Twenties at his East Hampton mansion, Washington State’s Hood Canal was the place to see and be seen in the Pacific Northwest during this eminent era. Heralded in 1924 as the first non-native artist colony in Washington State, painters, musicians, actors, poets, dancers and more reveled in the Hood Canal’s beauty for more than 20 summers. Inspired by the serene surroundings, crisp air and crystal clear water, artists of all types flocked to the Pacific Northwest for a Washington State vacation, or stay-cation, to share and embrace their passion for the arts. To celebrate this liberating time, Alderbrook Resort & Spa, located on the scenic south shore of Hood Canal, is hosting a variety of art focused activities and entertainment available to guests and non-guests alike throughout the month of June.
“The Hood Canal has been a favored vacation destination for decades – and for a time – it was the hot spot for any aspiring artist, and this played a significant role in shaping the city of Union and Alderbrook Resort,” said Shaun Tucker, General Manager of Alderbrook Resort & Spa. “This unique history and culture has helped ingrain the carefree, relaxed attitude we hope all of our guests can enjoy while visiting Alderbrook.”
Throughout the month of June, Alderbrook will celebrate the “Arts on the Hood Canal Month” as part of its centennial celebration. Activities for the month will capture the creative times of the roaring past, while bringing to life the region’s current culture of arts and expression, and include:
- Elton Bennett & Howard Leggett Art Show: Pieces from two of the Hood Canal’s most influential artists, Elton Bennett and Howard Leggett, will be showcased in the Twanoh Room and will be available for purchase. Bennett, a Hoquiam native, created and sold his screen printed art from the mid-1950s, until his death in 1973. His work has become some of the most highly collected in the Pacific Northwest, and his daughter Barbara will have many of his prints for show and sale. Union-native Leggett’s work is heavily influenced by Bennett’s style. He began selling his serigraphs in 1994 in galleries and art fairs from California to British Colombia, and will be on-site displaying many pieces and prints for show and sale. (Sunday, June 9, 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.)
- Corks and Canvasses: Every Monday in June, all guests are invited to enjoy an evening of art and wine as they take in Hood Canal’s natural beauty. From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., local art instructor Rob Kamin will gather with guests on Alderbrook’s picturesque front lawn to lead an evening of painting. Wine and art supplies are included with registration; reservations recommended as space is limited!
- Poet and Storyteller Jam: Relax on Alderbrook’s waterfront lawn from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23 for an event rooted back to the start of the artist colony. Local poets will entertain guests by reading their original works inspired by the Hood Canal and Alderbrook.
- Thursdays in June – Dungeness Crab BBQ: Located on the Cottage Lawn from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Complimentary to Resort guests.
In addition to this month long celebration of artistry in the Hood Canal, the Restaurant at Alderbrook is hosting a Father’s Day Brunch fit for a king. While brunch will be served from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., reservations also include 25% off of four rounds of golf with two complimentary carts at Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club, as well as a chance to win a guided fishing trip.
