According to Tim Babich, a central Florida water treatment systems professional, several recent scientific studies conclude that softened water can save consumers thousands of dollars in both energy and healthcare costs. Families may notice they have hard water if their dishes come out of the dishwasher with white, filmy stains, or if crusty white calcium carbonate scale builds up around sinks and faucets. In addition, government studies have recommended that families invest in home water treatment systems to reduce their exposure to contaminants in the water supply that may cause cancer and endocrine malfunction.
Mr. Babich, who installs and maintains central Florida water treatment systems for families throughout the area, explains that hard water can cause damage and decreased energy efficiency throughout the home, which can cost consumers a lot of money. He cites one study funded by the Water Quality Research Group that discovered a 48 percent decrease in gas water heater function due to hard water. Electric water heaters’ heating elements often burned out faster because scale buildup required much higher operating temperatures. At the same time, showerheads and faucets suffered an up to 75 percent loss of flow over the course of just 18 months. Dishwashers and washing machines also fared poorly.
“On the other hand, families who use a water treatment system have extended the lifecycle of their water-using appliances, and cut their detergent use by up to 50 percent. They save money because they don’t have to use as much energy or hot water to do the same things. They don’t have to use as much detergent and their appliances last longer. It’s also much easier on the environment,” says Mr. Babich.
Mr. Babich points out that the President’s Cancer Panel also recently recommended that consumers install home water treatment systems. This is because municipal water agencies are struggling to keep up with increasing levels of chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural and hard metal contaminants (like highly toxic Chromium-6) in the water system. The report, called “Reducing Environmental Cancer Risks: What We Can Do Now” states that “…filtering home tap water or well water can decrease exposure to numerous known or suspected carcinogens or endocrine-disrupting chemicals.” According to these reports, families with children, pregnant women, the elderly, or anyone with a weakened immune system are all particularly vulnerable to contaminants found in drinking water, making the need for effective home water treatment systems even more pressing.
Tim Babich, who owns and operates Kinetico Quality Water Systems, explains that he and his staff have committed themselves to the issue of water quality in central Florida because it affects so many people in so many ways. “Everybody needs clean water. It’s a basic need, but did you know that more than one billion people on this planet live with contaminated water and often become ill and die because of it? Aside from providing our customers here in central Florida with the best possible water treatment systems and service, we constantly educate ourselves and involve ourselves with water quality issues. We will run a free water quality test for any family who is interested, simply because we are really passionate about improving water quality for the families in our community.”
