A local firm expands its staff with the addition of a recent college graduate.

“I would encourage students to become involved in projects like these within your field of study in order to learn more about your industry and give yourself a leg up on the competition,” he said

Despite high unemployment and stagnant growth in the economy, a local firm expanded its staff with the addition of a recent college graduate. On September 12, 2011, Voyager Capital Management, LLC hired Chris Morgen to help perform equity and fixed income research and analysis, as well as rebalance and manage the firm’s client portfolios. Chris’s title is Portfolio Administrator Assistant.

Chris said the biggest reason he was able to land a job right out of college was because of his experience outside of the classroom. “Between studying for the Level I Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam and a broad understanding of the industry developed during summer internships, I was able to become well-educated about the industry and therefore, marketable in a tough job environment,” he said.

Chris, originally from Plymouth, Wisconsin, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in May 2011 with a dual Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics. While at the University, he and four other senior finance students were selected by University faculty to participate in the CFA Global Investment Research Challenge, a local and international equity research competition designed to give students an opportunity to apply investment research techniques to a publicly traded company and present a finished report to a team of industry professionals. Chris said that sacrificing winter break to work on the research project was a crucial learning opportunity that set him apart from other interviewees. “I would encourage students to become involved in projects like these within your field of study in order to learn more about your industry and give yourself a leg up on the competition,” he said.

Along with the everyday duties of helping to manage $180 million of clients’ assets, Chris will be working towards passing Level II of the three part Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam in June 2012.
