The Weather Channel Mobile Launches Comprehensive Weather Application for Android Platform

New weather application offers customizable forecasts and severe weather alerts for users of the Android platform.

Atlanta, GA (Vocus/PRWEB ) October 27, 2008 -- The Weather Channel Mobile today announced the launch of its advanced mobile weather application for the Android platform. Available through the Android Market on the T-Mobile G1 phone, the new application gives users the ability to view fully customized weather maps, detailed conditions and forecasts, local video and severe weather alerts. Weather information can be viewed for neighborhood landmarks such as schools, parks, lakes and more to assist with daily activity planning. In addition, location-enabled severe weather alerts let users know when dangerous weather threatens their area.

Through the “find me” function within The Weather Channel for Android application, users can get weather forecasts for their pinpointed location or can search by city, ZIP code, street address or landmark, for the most precise weather conditions available on a mobile device.

Multiple areas can be saved and nicknamed for quick reference. For example, consumers can find the forecast at home, keep up with airport conditions for a traveling spouse, and check in with a parent’s forecast in California -- all from one customized screen.

The Weather Channel for Android is an effective use of the many capabilities of the Android platform and offers unrivaled ease-of-use. The application includes interactive maps that are fully customizable and feature the functionality of Google Maps. Users can decide to display layers such as radar, clouds, UV index, rainfall, snowfall and more. Location-based video forecasts with The Weather Channel on-air talent include conditions and forecasts for your current location or other U.S. locations.

“The Weather Channel Mobile has been a leader in the mobile space for nearly ten years, and during that time we’ve learned what users want in a mobile experience,” said Louis Gump, VP of Mobile for The Weather Channel Interactive. “This product builds upon that deep knowledge and resource base, with features such as interactive maps, severe weather alerts, and extensive customization options available on this new platform. As a result, this product will again change the way consumers interact with weather information, from Concourse A at the airport to bleachers at the local softball field and beyond.”

The new Android application features patented technology from The Weather Channel® that provides detailed weather conditions accurate up to 2 kilometers to provide users with the current conditions specific to their exact location -- not just the city or region. This technology goes beyond the current weather reporting system, combining traditional weather observations with even more data to provide unique conditions for more than 1.9 million locations -- literally filling in the gaps of the reporting systems used by other providers.

The Weather Channel for Android was selected as one of the Top 50 applications in Google's Android Developer Challenge, an international developer contest launched in January 2008 that was designed to inspire the creation of applications to "surprise and delight" mobile users. The Weather Channel application was selected as a semifinalist from 1,788 entries submitted by developers in more than 70 countries. As a semifinalist, The Weather Channel Mobile team received a $25,000 cash prize that will be donated to the National Science & Technology Education Partnership to promote achievement in science, math and technology at local middle and high schools.
