NTIS and Iterasi Announce Partnership

The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce and Iterasi, a provider of enterprise web archiving products and services, have announced a joint venture partnership. The partnership will enable NTIS and Iterasi to work together to provide web archiving and web information services to agencies of the federal government.

Archiving web records has become a requirement for both government and private organizations as web communication continues to grow as a central communications channel. As USA.gov states: "All federal public websites must comply with existing laws and regulations related to the management of public web records. This includes the need for organizations to comply with NARA guidance related to web records."

Web content is highly sophisticated and dynamic, and often it is impossible to maintain accurate web records using traditional backup technology. Iterasi's web archiving technology overcomes these challenges, creating manageable, accurate, and searchable web records of even very complex websites and pages.

As a recent example of the need for web archiving services, in 2009 the Executive Office of the President (EOP) solicited bids for capturing and archiving the White House’s entire public internet presence, i.e., Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, etc., in order to comply with the Presidential Records Act. They require technology to “capture, store, extract to approved formats, and transfer content published by EOP on publicly-accessible web sites, along with information posted by non-EOP persons on publicly-accessible web sites where the EOP offices under PRA maintains a presence.”

“We are excited to work with NTIS to provide web archiving services to federal agencies,” said Pete Grillo, Iterasi’s CEO. “There are a number of areas in the scientific and technical arena that require web archiving, and this relationship enables us to meet those needs effectively and cost-efficiently.”

The Director of NTIS, Bruce Borzino, stated: “NTIS partnering with Iterasi is a step forward in NTIS’ constant endeavor to ensure the capture and archiving of this nation’s vast wealth of scientific and technical information available on the web.”
