Full-service web development company Magnetic is going green with a comprehensive program to make the office more environmentally friendly. The initiative will focus on reducing waste and conserving energy. Magnetic President Jennifer Bakunas said, “Our Company always strives to improve our community. Environmental stewardship allows us to better our world, both now and for the future.”
For over 2 years, Magnetic has had paperless office and computer hardware recycling initiatives in place. Files are shared in a strategic manner rather than printing copies and outdated computer hardware is properly disposed of through Dell’s recycling program. To further decrease Magnetic’s environmental footprint, they have joined forces with other companies in the Tampa Palms Professional Center, including Triadex Services and Casa Fina Realty, to begin a recycling program through Conex Recycling.
“The vast majority of office refuse consists of paper, plastic, and aluminum, so recycling these items significantly decreases our office waste,” said Bakunas. “We look forward to reaching full involvement from our neighbors here in the Professional Center.” Magnetic now has on-site recycling bins for paper, plastic, glass, and metal.
Magnetic is installing XLerator hand dryers in the restrooms in order to eliminate non-recyclable waste. These models are the only hand dryers to earn approval from GreenSpec, a UK-based organization that independently evaluates products for their environmental impact. The XLerator hand dryers not only reduce paper towel usage by up to 95%, but they also use 80% less energy than traditional models.
In the kitchen, Magnetic staff will now use reusable glasses and mugs instead of disposable plastic cups. Meanwhile the company is considering other measures to further improve sustainability and environmental friendliness in the future, including an electronic document signing program to serve clients and reduce paper use. Magnetic’s facilities may soon include motion sensor lighting, which automatically turn off lights in unused areas like conference and break rooms.
The staff at Magnetic has welcomed the environmental innovations with enthusiasm. The recent improvements complement the company’s efforts to consistently provide a unique and pleasant workplace. “We value environmentally conscientious actions at the corporate level, and it’s also a priority among our employees, so we were confident they would appreciate and embrace these changes,” said Bakunas. That dedication to employee satisfaction has catapulted Magnetic to the top of the Tampa Bay Business Journals “Best Places to Work” list for four consecutive years.
