LA Bariatrics, the weight loss surgery program at Marina Del Rey Hospital in Los Angeles, is introducing a new program designed to further assist patients in meeting their goals for weight loss and improved health. Recent bariatric patients of Marina Del Rey Hospital will now have the opportunity to participate in the Mentor Program, which will match them with successful patients to provide one-on-one support and coaching.

While we are very excited by the additional support offered by the Mentor Program, patients must remember that they are being treated for a serious medical condition and that they should stay in close contact with our highly-trained clinical team.

The Mentor Program will be provided at no charge and will add yet another resource to the comprehensive support already provided by the LA Bariatrics program. Patients seeking guidance can request a mentor via the LA Bariatrics website. Then they are matched with a mentor who has undergone the same weight loss procedure and who has similar interests.

“This has been happening informally for years,” said Bridgette Agee, a Registered Nurse and Bariatric Coordinator at LA Bariatrics. “We saw how effective peer-to-peer support could be, and the concept evolved naturally from our support group community. Now that we have a concrete process in place, we hope that many more patients will advantage of this valuable tool,” added Agee.

Dr. Jeremy Korman, bariatric surgeon and medical director at LA Bariatrics, discussed the importance of follow-up care to the success of bariatric patients. "The truth is that surgery is a small, although critical, element of the overall treatment of the patient. The real transformation happens in the long term lifestyle modification which is greatly facilitated by hands on support from a knowledgeable team.”

Mentors will be selected from a talented pool of successful, compassionate individuals, all of whom have undergone bariatric surgery with the LA Bariatrics program. Once matched up, each mentor and patient will design their individual program together. The mentor can help the new patient set goals and hold the patient accountable, answer the patient’s questions and direct the patient to other resources within the program. They can communicate with each other, share recipes, exercise together, and cheer each other on making the transitional period for the patient a much easier process.

“The first year after bariatric surgery is critical. Patients need to adjust to a new healthy lifestyle, modify their eating habits, and incorporate daily exercise. They encounter not only physical changes, but emotional challenges as well,” said Agee.

Support is essential during this time. Currently, LA Bariatrics offers patients the opportunity to participate in support groups. During these group meetings, patients can ask for professional advice and discuss their experiences with their peers.

“When I was going through my own weight loss surgery, the support from other patients made a huge difference,” said CJ Lawson, one of the LA Bariatrics mentors. “Now I’m just excited by the opportunity to give back.”

With adequate guidance, the Mentor Program can help patients achieve weight loss success. Our statistics show that patients who come regularly to support groups are more likely to succeed and reach their weight loss goals. Of course, none of this supersedes the clinical guidance and education provided by the surgeon, nurse and medical staff of the LA Bariatrics program.

“While we are very excited by the additional support offered by the Mentor Program, patients must remember that they are being treated for a serious medical condition and that they should stay in close contact with our highly-trained clinical team,” said Korman.

Former bariatric patients of LA Bariatrics, who have had weight loss surgery at least one year ago, are excellent candidates and are welcomed to be an active part of the Mentor Program by becoming mentors for other newer patients.
