Mailboxes are jammed with college materials and the e-mail inbox is no different. Selecting a college can be an overwhelming process but Welcome to College, a new free user-driven Web application, can take some of the stress out of the equation for prospective students. It’s all in the visit when it comes to finding the best fit for college.

Welcome to College is a one-stop shop for everything related to the college visit. The unique site also integrates social media elements that enable students to share their experiences. The tool includes the ability to rate and keep track of impressions during and after college visits.

Site founder Justin Bayer first contemplated the concept in 2005 while running the campus tour program at the University of Vermont. Bayer recognized that students wanted to be able to capture and share their experiences while they were still fresh in their minds.

“Research shows the most important factor in deciding where to attend college is a visit to campus,” Bayer said. “We created this tool to help students and families keep track of the many impressions and gut feelings that occur when setting foot on a campus.”

The support from institutions around the country is evident as the start-up has already secured ten partnerships in five different states. Enrollment professionals from partner institutions see the value in teaming up with Welcome to College.

“It is essential for us to know what we are doing well in addition to areas where we can improve the student and family experience,” said Sundar Kumarasamy, University of Dayton vice president for enrollment management. “Welcome to College will help us better manage these expectations and relationships with prospective families.”

“Participating in Welcome to College presents the opportunity to create additional points of engagement with students,” said Suzanne Petrusch, St. Mary’s University in San Antonio vice president for enrollment management. “While our goal is to put the red carpet out for our visitors every day, Welcome to College ups the ante. We need to continually strive to offer a first-rate experience. The prospective student world is talking.”

The exciting momentum is only beginning as Welcome to College plans to launch a national grassroots marketing campaign later this month.
