Concealed for a decade in his secret Texas retreat, the powerful, visionary work of Outsider contemporary artist Werrick Armstrong is revealed to the public for the first time.
The entire collection, which is remarkable in its passion and scope, will be shown by invitation only in Armstrong's state-of-the-art exhibition space within his private Texas compound. The select collectors and art professionals who have received one of the coveted 300 certified invitations will be among the chosen few to share in the discovery of this unknown cache of extraordinary art.
Werrick Armstrong's agent, Al Spector, describes the collection of more than 100 pieces as "provocative, mysterious, terrifying and ultimately, sublime." The entire body of work encompasses installations, mixed media pieces, paintings and bronze sculptures.
On view in this controversial exhibition are Werrick Armstrong's installation, 'King of the Jews,' depicting a decayed Christ in tattered pugilist regalia, beaten and crucified in an actual boxing ring that was acquired directly from a boxing gym. The eerie 'The Pain Behind the Smile Choir' mixed media sculpture poses six baby dolls around a single large microphone. Gaiety is suggested by their poses and multi-colored feather costumes, a gaiety belied by the spectral paper masks each wears to disguise the frightening reality within.
'Werrick Armstrong's untrained, unchained artistic passion, his need to create unencumbered by the approval of others, and his belief in the spiritual nature of his talent place him squarely in the Outsider tradition,' says Spector. 'But he is a rogue among Outsiders. He has branded his own category of contemporary art and is taking it for a wild ride in his own chosen direction.'
Werrick Armstrong's unorthodox approach to the handling and sale of his collection make him unique among Outsiders. Never has an Outsider had the combination of means, savvy, and sheer nerve to present himself as does Armstrong.
By definition, Outsider art encompasses the work of unschooled artists living and working outside widely accepted social conventions. Recently, this stream of contemporary art has made Tsunami-sized waves in the art world, drawing impressive sums for pieces by Henry Darger, Bill Traylor, Sam Doyle, Martin Ramirez and William Hawkins. However, few such artists reap the benefits directly.
With no track record in the art world establishment and no gala introductory event, this 60-year-old grandfather of five has started at the top, presenting his multimillion dollar collection to a select group of major collectors and art professionals. Werrick Armstrong is confident that among them are those who will embrace his art and maverick approach both aesthetically and financially.
These and Armstrong's other extraordinary visions will be displayed indefinitely in his private exhibition space. Additional invitations will be issued at the artist's discretion.
