Western Schools — a leading accredited provider of healthcare continuing education — will celebrate national Nurses Week by offering a free 2-hour continuing education course download to every nurse in the country. In addition, nurses can visit Western Schools’ Facebook Page during Nurses Week to participate in a contest to win scrubs and a free Kindle e-Reader.

“Western Schools joins the American Nurses Association in celebrating all nurses and their commitment to lifelong learning. National Nurse’s Week is an excellent opportunity to recognize the professionalism and dedication of nurses everywhere,” said Amy Bernard, MS,BSN,RN-BC, Director of Continuing Education for Western Schools. “We are grateful to all of the nurses who stay current with the latest information in a rapidly changing health care environment. By continuously studying, they improve their skills, maintain competence, and provide patients with the highest quality care.”

Nurses can download the free 2-hour course, “Evidence-Based Practice: What Every Nurse Needs to Know” at http://www.westernschools.com/nursesweek anytime between May 1 and May 12. This course provides an overview of evidence-based practice (EBP) and how to incorporate it into daily nursing practice. After outlining the EBP process, the course highlights how to formulate an appropriate clinical question; how to find the best research evidence, appraise it, and apply it to patient care; and finally, how to evaluate the outcomes of practice decisions.

Nurses Week has a long history dating back to the 1950’s and Nurses Day has consistently been celebrated in May since the 1970’s. In 1994, the Board of Directors of the American Nurses Association designated May 6 - 12 as the permanent dates of Nurses Week. May 6th is Nurses Day and May 12th is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Western Schools is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation. As an ANCC-accredited organization, Western Schools’ courses are accepted for re-licensure by state licensing boards with mandatory continuing education requirements.
