The real focus of the parade is always on the children, ages 1 - 95 that hold the season close at heart.
Westwood, NJ (PRWEB) November 23, 2011
Westwood Chamber of Commerce will open the holiday season in grand style with an Amex sponsored event that is geared toward encouraging holiday consumers to spend their shopping dollars with local merchants. The 2nd annual Small Business Saturday® is set for November 26, 2011, a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. The Westwood Chamber of Commerce has embraced this event and encouraged all of its member businesses to participate. All shoppers can get a one time $25 credit on their AMEX statement, by simply registering their credit card with AMEX SBS, with any purchase at a participating Westwood store.
American Express is promoting the event to millions of consumers across the nation encouraging them to Shop Small at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy. "When we all shop small, it will be huge!" Westwood Chamber president, Gene Callaghan, owner of Irish Eyes Imports, said, "We're excited about our participation in the Small Business Saturday AMEX promotion and enthusiastic because many of our members have embraced the program."
The following weekend marks the traditional start of the holiday season in Pascack Valley. The 21st Annual Home for the Holidays is scheduled for Saturday, December 3rd, 2011. The event will open with a parade that begins at 6pm and the theme this year will be Hometown Holiday. The parade will feature marching bands, fantastic floats, holiday characters and of course, Santa on Engine 14. After arriving in Veterans Park, the tree and candles will be lit and stores and restaurants along the avenue will be providing cookies, hot chocolate, cider and live music.
Home for the Holidays was originally started by the Westwood Fire Department and the earliest involvement of the Westwood Chamber of Commerce dates to 1967. The very first year Santa arrived on a "lavish float" provided by Triple S Blue Stamps after visiting sick children at Pascack Valley Hospital. The current version of the parade with the Holiday Open Houses began in 1990 and continues to date.
The festivities begin early with the final touches on floats and costumes and the marking of the parade line up. There will be a story hour at the library with Mrs.Claus, street entertainment with stilt walkers, magicians and face painters, music and dj's with plenty of free hot chocolate and popcorn.
In 2010, there were over 60 participants and a crowd estimated at 8,000. (See video from Patch.com.)The real focus of the parade is always on the children, ages 1 - 95 that hold the season close at heart. There will be various toy drives set up in front of the Iron Horse and everyone is invited to bring an unwrapped gift or gift card and say hello to Uncle Lee who has always been the driving force of this wonderful event.
