Saturday, October 20th, 2012 marks the 2nd Annual Emergency Preparedness Fair for community members and families to be held in Westwood Village, CA. The Westwood Neighborhood Council will sponsor the event inviting LAPD, LAFD, DWP & CERT disaster pros as well as Red Cross instructors to provide their expertise about what to do and what not to do during a major quake. ‘The Big Shaker’, a magnitude 8.0 mobile earthquake simulator will be open for the public to experience the reality of a big quake, and many local emergency preparedness vendors will be on hand.

First Aid Global, a local emergency preparedness company attended last year’s event and one of their spokesmen had this to say: “We found last year’s crowd of people to be very motivated to ask questions and stock up on emergency preparedness supplies. We’re going to offer for sale first aid kits, long-term storage food and water, earthquake kits for one person to family-sized to kits capable of handling an entire office, as well as emergency pet kits, protective wear and solar powered battery backup systems.”

Last year, according to the website shakeout.org, over 8 million Californians participated in ‘The Great California Shakeout’ where they ‘dropped, covered and held on’ during the largest earthquake drill ever. Although this year’s ‘2012 Shakeout’ occurs on Thursday, October 18th, the Westwood Village event will happen on Saturday so that people from the entire Los Angeles area can attend.

Broxton Avenue will be blocked off to accommodate all the vendors, media and disaster pros, as well as what’s expected to be a very good crowd. Scores of businesses will remain open on Broxton Avenue during the fair including Landmark Theatres, bookstores and scores of restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen, Barney’s Beanery, Korean Food, Sushi, Falafel and Waffles.
