Re-emergence of Giant Blue Whales a Boon for Orange County Whale Watching Company

Tourists are flocking to enjoy whale watching from Newport Beach to Dana Point as more blue whales appear off the Orange County coastline. Newport Landing Whale Watching’s year-round 2.5-hour cruises treat guests to an up close and personal encounter with blue whales, finback whales, minke whales, and mega pods of dolphins.

People have an amazing opportunity to enjoy whale watching, and experience one of the wonders of nature: the giant blue whale!

Thanks to the re-emergence of giant blue whales just off the coastline, Orange County whale watching company Newport Landing Whale Watching is welcoming more and more residents and tourists to its year-round 2.5 hour whale watching cruises.

Blue whale sightings, which were once a rarity off the Orange County coastline, have steadily increased since the summer of 2005. In fact, in 2011 Newport Landing Whale Watching had over 1000 blue whale sightings over a four month period, and in 2012 the number of sightings has been just as frequent.

“We aren’t quite sure why so many blue whales have flocked to the waters off Orange County,” commented Thor Brisbin of Newport Landing Whale Watching. “We think that the abundance of krill could be a factor, but the sheer number of blue whales can’t be explained by this alone. Healthier overall populations of blue whales is another possibility for the increase in whale watching in Dana Point, as is changing weather and water patterns. Even changes in the thermocline, which is the depth at which the ocean remains at relatively constant temperature, could be playing a role.”

Blue whales are the largest of all living creatures, and can grow to 100 feet in length. They feed primary on krill, a small shrimp-like creature. The tail of a blue whale is the size of a VW bug, and their spout can reach heights of 15 feet or more.

Added Brisbin: “Whatever the reasons for the increase in sightings, people have an amazing opportunity to enjoy Orange County whale watching, and experience one of the wonders of nature: the giant blue whale!”

Residents and tourists who want to see majestic blue whales up close and personal can join Newport Landing Whale Watching on one of their 2.5-hour cruises. The cruises depart from Newport Beach, and guests are also often treated to sightings of finback whales, minke whales, and mega pods of dolphins.
