For many providers, the summer season begins in June and continues through September. Usage increases in many places during the summer season, and some providers set summer rate schedules so that usage over a certain baseline costs more during the summer season.

Phoenix, AZ had the highest bill, calculated using rate info from Salt River Project and APS. Though rates remained the same, average usage in Phoenix is at its peak during July. Las Vegas, NV, using rate data from Nevada Power, had the largest month over month increase in July, jumping up by $67.19 compared to June. Nevada Power’s rates actually slightly decreased, but usage spikes significantly in Nevada in July compared to the other states in the index.

Seattle, WA, served by Puget Sound, sees steadily decreasing usage in the summer months due to the milder weather there during that time of year. Rates did not change from June to July, but the decrease in usage accounts for a small decrease in the average monthly bill. The lowest bill belongs to Los Angeles, CA. In general, electricity usage in California is low due to mild weather and also the government’s energy efficiency programs. Relatively lower rates compared to other providers in California also contribute to the low bill.

1.    Highest bill: New York, NY, at $35.05
2.    Lowest bill: Boston, MA at $8.20
3.    Largest MOM increase: Indianapolis, IN, from $28.55 to $29.73.
4.    Largest MOM decrease: New York, NY, from $36.82 to $35.05.

Natural gas usage declines to a yearly low in many places in June and July. The average monthly bills in July for all of the cities in the index remained fairly stable next to the bills for June, with none fluctuating more than $2.

The average bill for Indianapolis, IN, using rate information from Citizen’s Gas, saw the largest MOM increase, though the increase was relatively small at only $1.18. A slight increase in the base energy price resulted in a higher bill compared to June, though usage remained the same. New York, NY maintained its record for having the highest bill, calculated using rate info from National Grid. NYC consistently has relatively high usage compared to other cities, and accordingly has seen the highest bills; however, NYC also saw the largest MOM decrease from June to July, partially because base energy price decreased along with usage.

Boston, MA, served by NSTAR, had the lowest bill. This is the fourth month in a row for Boston- rates have not changed since last month, and usage has stayed at a seasonal low.
