WhitePages.us.org to Block Customers Who Try to Use Their Service for Illegal Purposes
Denver, CO (PRWEB) June 27, 2014 -- WhitePages.us.org has installed software into their search system that can identify and block people who attempt to use their search service to break the law, the company said yesterday.
“We are happy to work with honest customers who use our phone number search service for legal reasons,” a WhitePages.us.org spokesman said. “But it has come to our attention that there are some people who use phone lookups to break the law. We decided it was our duty to install software that will block them from doing so.”
Because WhitePages.us.org is not a consumer reporting company, users cannot use their service to violate the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This means that they cannot use any information gathered to discriminate in housing or employment decisions, to offer or deny credit, or to set insurance rates.
“Most important to us are the anti-stalking laws,” he said. “If someone moves in order to get away from an abusive romantic partner, a person can't use our service or any similar service to try to track them down.”
The company said that the software looks at how the consumer is using the system and can find red flags that are an indication of potential illegal acts. It then blocks the search until the consumer contacts the customer service department.
“Our customer service people will then talk to the user and make the final decision about if they should be allowed to do a search using our system,” he said.
