Whole Foods Market announced this week that it plans to triple its number of store locations across the country. Bloomberg.com reported that Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market will soon be expanding its reach, with plans to triple its number of store locations across the country. The new locations, which will serve smaller markets and areas currently lacking healthy, natural grocery options, are set to bring Whole Foods’ total store count up to 1,000. The first new store is expected to open in May in Detroit, Michigan.

Whole Foods Market is an American grocery store chain that specializes in organic, natural and raw foods. Based out of Austin, Texas, the company was founded in 1980 by John Mackey. The company’s first stores were all Texas-based, starting with Austin, and then expanding out to Dallas and Houston. By 1999, there were a total of 100 stores. Currently, Whole Foods boasts 331 locations across the country.
