When the Wicked Witch of the West first hit movie screens, it was her pasty, green skin that horrified young and old. In the latest musical version of her story, however, green is beautiful, and no one knows that more than the woman more people have bought Wicked tickets to see in the role than any other actress: Dee Roscioli.

Roscioli has crisscrossed the country playing the misunderstood Elphaba, starting first as an understudy to the role before eventually stepping onto the Broadway stage and now landing at the Blaisdell Center in Hawaii. Through several national tours, she's become used to the to the intense pre-show process needed to change her from a normal human being into a green-skinned witch. A team of makeup and hair specialists begin the nearly hour long transformation by brushing the actress' face and arms with green makeup. One of the makeup artists uses a brush to lightly apply the pain to give it an overall airbrushes look, letting some of the variations in Roscioli's own skin to give depth to the color. Normal blush doesn't work with the green makeup. Instead, black powder is used to flesh out the contours of the actress' face. A green net top helps to complete the completely green look: even her fingernails are green.

With over a thousand performances under her belt, Roscioli has played the Wicked Witch more times than any other actress, including the original Elphaba, Idina Menzel. Many actors take up to an hour to get into their characters, but for this seasoned performer, a few minutes backstage before her first entrance is enough to get ready for the performance. Despite having been onstage around the country, she still isn't tired of playing the plucky heroine who finds a way to be true to herself by the end of the story.
