This will be a lot of fun for families and a golden opportunity for military personnel to enroll in a degree program that will take their careers to a new level
West Des Moines, IA (Vocus) September 17, 2010
William Penn University's College for Working Adults (CWA) honors military families this month with fee waivers and a series of special events that include a Family Fun Day and Resource Fair, and a special presentation by Four Star General Tommy Franks.
The Family Fun Day and Resource Fair will take place Saturday, Sept. 18 on William Penn's West Des Moines campus (6000 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa). American Equity and the Veterans of Foreign Affairs Ladies Auxiliary are providing a hearty lunch, with the help of a big grill from the American Legion. Chick-fil-A also will be there, along with Famous Dave's mascot, their famous cornbread muffins and delicious chocolate from Chocolate Storybook. Numerous games and activities include a bounce house for the children sponsored by Knapp Properties and a Chick-fil-A cow toss game with the Chick-fil-A mascot. Displays include an H3 Army Hummer and cars from the Classic Car Club and Stew Hanson's Dodge Dealership. Area businesses are joining in the fun with door prizes and giveaways: NASCAR tickets from Iowa Speedway, massage certificates, a free one-room stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, gift baskets and more.
"This will be a lot of fun for families and a golden opportunity for military personnel to enroll in a degree program that will take their careers to a new level," said Molly Moeller, CWA's Director of Enrollment. "We look forward to welcoming them on campus."
William Penn is Military Friendly
Resources and career opportunities for military and their families will be an important part of the fair. Veterans Affairs reps will be on-site to discuss benefits and employers will be showcasing job openings. "Active military, veterans and spouses are already eligible for application fee waivers when they enroll at William Penn," said Moeller. "For the month of September, we are also adding fee waivers for their dependents and individuals in law enforcement, corrections, and fire departments."
Among all the "don't miss" opportunities is the chance to get more information about Gen. Franks' presentation at William Penn on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Gen. Franks was the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Central Command and the U.S. commander of the coalition military operations in the war against Iraq. Franks led the post-9/11 attack against the Taliban in Afghanistan, America's 2003 invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Since his retirement he has served on the William Penn Board of Trustees and taken a keen interest in the university's leadership program, encouraging study and debate on the traits of leadership.
Sponsors of the Family Fun Day and Resource Fair include William Penn University, American Equity, Knapp Properties, Pepsi, Costco, Liberty Bank, Famous Daves, Chick-fil-A and Stew Hansen Dodge Dealership.
