Two world wars couldn't stop the Oscars, which have been held annually in Los Angeles without exception for 79 years. However, an ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America, which has already claimed the Golden Globes as a victim, is set to threaten the biggest night of the year in Hollywood. Leading online sportsbook, PinnacleSports.com, has posted odds on when the strike will end.

When will the Writers' Strike End?

After 5pm on February 24th, 2008        4/5 (bet £5 to win £4)*
Before 5pm on February 24th, 2008         8/7 (bet £7 to win £8)*

With the 80th Annual Academy Awards scheduled for February 24th, the oddsmakers at PinnacleSports.com therefore suggest that the industrial action by the Writers Guild of America could force the first ever abandonment of the traditional Oscar award ceremony, effectively pulling the plug on the biggest party in the showbiz calendar.

Though winning an Academy Award represents the greatest professional achievement within the film industry, they are also synonymous with the glitz and glamour of the movie business, and immensely popular as a media spectacle. The Oscars are also critical to a city built around the film and TV industry, generating an estimated £66m in revenue, as well providing invaluable exposure for films and their stars.

Crucially, the Writers Guild have the support of actors in their quest to renegotiate a new basic contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), who represent the interests of 397 American film and television producers for a say in future DVD residuals, and compensation for 'new media' content distributed through emerging technology such as the Internet.

"The competitively priced betting markets at PinnacleSports.com are widely acknowledged as an excellent barometer of market sentiment, whether in professional sports, entertainment or even on predicting who will be the next Pope", said Simon Noble, a spokesperson for PinnacleSports.com. "The early favourite at PinnacleSports.com certainly supports the Writers Guild's opinion that the strike is likely to be a marathon, with no reprieve in sight for Tinseltown's biggest night".

The issue could turn on the negotiations between the AMPTP and the Directors Guild of America (DGA), which began on January 12th. The traditionally less militant DGA could put pressure on the writers to end the strike, should they reach an agreement with the AMPTP, but neither organisation will comment until negotiations have concluded, so until then the red carpet stays in storage.
