Skolds has extensive experience in the energy industry, most recently serving as senior executive vice president of Chicago-based electric utility Exelon Corporation's generation business, where he oversaw 29,000 megawatts of generation capacity.

- Prior to Exelon, Skolds worked at Columbia, S.C. utility SCANA Corp. in a number of capacities, including president and COO of South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G).
- Skolds spent five and a half years in the U.S. Navy training for and operating nuclear submarines.
- Skolds graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. with a bachelor's degree in engineering. He received his M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
