For novice and veteran eyes alike, reading wine labels can be difficult. Thankfully there are a few key terms such as "Estate-Produced" that are regulated to mean exactly one thing. Cellars Wine Club offers an explanation as to what this term means, pointing out the differences and similarities between estate and non-estate wines.
According to Cellars Wine Club, there are three requirements for "estate-produced" label eligibility. These requirements stipulate measures of control over the grow region, grapes, and the process. Wine that is made to this standard is generally of higher quality, because of the better oversight of the process as a whole, from vine to bottle.
First of the three criteria for estate-produced status is the grow region; “...wines must be produced in the same American Viticultural Area as the source of their grapes.”
Second, grapes can only be used if the vineyard is operated by the wine manufacturer.
Finally, wine in the making cannot be processed using multiple wineries.
