The tour to Greece and Turkey coincides with Easter in Greece (April 3-11) and this important cultural event will be spent in a village celebration. The tour includes two cooking classes and visits to major archeological ruins in Athens as well as visits to the islands of Crete and Santorini. There will of course be numerous winery visits in Greece and the optional tour to Turkey.
Immediately following is a tour of Piedmont and the Cinque Terre (April 16-24). Using the Renaissance town of Alba as home base, participants will visit many of the prestigious wineries of Barolo and Barbaresco and have many opportunities to experience Piedmontese cuisine, which is Italian with a French dimension. The tours ends with 3 glorious nights in Santa Margherita, a seaside gem on the Ligurian coast. From there, some brave souls will visit the Cinque Terre, the 5 villages that cling to the hillsides and can be reached by footpath or ferry.
During the Fall Harvest season, there are two wine tours planned to Southern France. The Rhone Valley (October 6-14) is home of serious syrah. Indeed the Rhone is a paradise for red wine lovers. The tour will spend 3 nights in the northern Rhone using Tain L'Ermitage as its base. That is followed by 4 nights in Avignon, in the heart of the Southern Rhone Valley. The most famous wine here is Chateauneuf-du-Pape but there are many rising stars such as Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Tavel.
The Rhone tour is followed immediately by A Week in Provence and the Languedoc (October 14-22).The first half is based in Aix-en-Provence, a superb place close to all the highlight areas mentioned in Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence". The second half is based in Montpellier, in the heart of the Languedoc. The Languedoc is famous for its garrigue landscape which even permeates the olfactory dimensions of the wine. Cultural highlights will be visits to Sète, the Roquefort cheese caves and oyster farms.
