Sean Taylor, Wintergreen Resort's director of golf, spa and retail has been named 2009 Merchandiser of the Year by the PGA of America, Middle Atlantic Section. Taylor oversees two golf shops year-round, at Wintergreen Resort's Stoney Creek Golf Course and at the Mountain Inn, and a third during the non-snow season at Devils Knob Golf Course.

The honor was awarded in the resort category and recognizes PGA members who have demonstrated superior skills as merchandisers in the promotion of golf and excellence in golf shop operations. Criteria used by the section's Special Awards Committee include community involvement, as well as merchandising performance, techniques and philosophy.

The individual achievements that led to the honor included:

1.    Taylor's team coordination of a golf tournament to benefit the ziMS Foundation (which supports research and patients with Multiple Sclerosis);
2.    Wintergreen Resort's formation of a more focused partnership with Callaway Golf;
3.    Promotions that featured the traditional (a dozen Callaway golf balls with each tee time) to the more unique (giving away roses at a women's event, each petal representing the recipient's discount percentage on merchandise, roughly 25 to 30 percent per rose).

"The award may have one name on it, but it reflects the hard work of our entire team at Wintergreen," Taylor said. "It's recognition for the entire golf operations team who serve our guests every day and contribute so much to making our special programs successful."

Among his 20-person staff, Taylor singled out Shaun Fronk, Wintergreen's director of golf retail; Geoff Redgrave, head golf professional at Stoney Creek; and Tim Crandall, head golf professional at Devils Knob.

Taylor, who also heads the Wintergreen Golf Academy, is now eligible for the PGA's national merchandiser award, which is to be presented at the PGA Merchandise Show, Jan. 29-31 in Orlando, Fla.
