"Extreme right-wing Republican Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and Republican legislators continue their war on women by expanding the government's intrusion into women's reproductive healthcare decisions."

Leaders of the Women’s Strike Force today condemned the Virginia General Assembly and Governor Bob McDonnell for their joint responsibility in limiting women’s reproductive freedom.
The Virginia General Assembly voted Wednesday to prohibit insurers from offering abortion coverage in federally managed health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act, due to go into full affect on Jan. 1, 2014. The law was an amendment offered by McDonnell that forbids the sale of any insurance policy or optional rider that would cover most abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is endangered.
"Extreme right-wing Republican Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and Republican legislators continue their war on women by expanding the government's intrusion into women's reproductive healthcare decisions,” said Women’s Strike Force President Katherine Waddell.
“This law will hit hardest the women who can least afford it – those who will depend on the exchanges for health insurance,” Waddell said.
Health exchanges are online marketplaces where low- and moderate-income indivuals and small businesses can buy health insurance, some with government subsidies. To obtain insurance that provides abortion coverage, women will have to purchase insurance outside the exchange.
Waddell said that the Women’s Strike Force is working to stop the erosion of women’s reproductive freedom by raising money to defeat legislators who continue to introduce and support measures that limit abortion rights. “The time to stop this is on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013,” she said.
