I read something once that said, ‘When people are mining for gold, sell shovels.’ Instead of trying to compete with people in this gold rush of online businesses, I instead sold shovels--WordPress help and support.

Fresh out of college and with only a couple hundred dollars, Manhattan Beach resident Brandon Yanofsky has started a business that is making it easier for others to start online businesses.
Says Yanofsky: “All throughout college, I knew I wanted to own my own business. I started a few clothing companies, worked with some small start-ups, and tried to launch a small business marketing website, but nothing really took hold.”
It wasn’t only after he took some time to examine his strengths that he began to experience success.
“I sat down and asked myself, ‘What’s something I’m good at and that people would pay for?’ And then it hit me. All these people I knew were trying to start their own online businesses but knew nothing about building a website. I could help them.”
Due to the recession, many people had turned to starting their own online businesses. And the first thing they’d do is build a website. Today, a majority of these people use an open-source software called WordPress. Brandon began offering one-on-one WordPress help by phone and Skype.
“I read something once that said, ‘When people are mining for gold, sell shovels.’ Instead of trying to compete with people in this gold rush of online businesses, I instead sold shovels--WordPress help and support.”
A majority of websites now use to WordPress build their websites. Because it is open-source software, there’s no company to call when a user needs help. There are support forums, but many beginners need someone to walk them through it.
So, with a couple hundred dollars and a laptop, Yanofsky built a website for his new business and called it myWPexpert.com. He also began buying advertising space on Google Adwords. Now, whenever anyone searches for WordPress help, they’d see the myWPexpert.com ad.
“A lot of people ask me, ‘How did you learn all this? Did you learn it in college?’ I always tell them that I learned it all just by taking risks and starting businesses. It was just a lot of hard work and an obsession to test out different ideas, see what worked, and optimize.”
Even though he’s experienced a level of success in just a few months that many businesses hope for for years, Yanofsky doesn’t plan to stop.
“One reason many businesses fail is because they stop innovating at the first signs of success. They become complacent, even as the market changes, and they soon become outdated. My goal is to never stop improving.”
Up next on his list, Yanofsky and his company plan to offer online WordPress workshops and an online resource with free WordPress tips for everyone from beginners to advanced users.
Yanofsky also plans to start a website showing people how they can start their own online businesses using the same strategy he used.
