Blizzard Says Buying WoW Gold Online Violates Terms of Use
Manhattan, NY (PRWEB) May 2, 2007 -- When World of Warcraft was released in November 2004, few imagined that the game would spawn an economy outside of the in-game currency. However, 2½ years and eight million players later, game developer Blizzard Entertainment is faced with this exact reality. The continued success of the widely popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) has resulted in the emergence of websites that trade in virtual currency, offering large sums of WoW gold to players in exchange for real-life money.
Although the game is designed to reward players with virtual gold for completing challenging quests and killing mobs of creatures, many players find the traditional gold production method too slow for their liking. The advent of online gold sellers permits players to purchase gold at a cost, allowing them to use the currency in-game. The problem is, though, that purchasing gold is in violation of World of Warcraft's Terms of Use.
Blizzard Entertainment has labeled the purchase of WoW gold as an "exploitation of the World of Warcraft economy", stating that such an action is in direct conflict with the "essence" of the game. As a consequence of violating the game's Terms of Use, Blizzard reserves the right to permanently disable a user's account. This effectively terminates a gamer's access to WoW and wipes out all of his or her characters.
Ben Baker, a self-proclaimed WoW addict, learned about the risks of buying online gold firsthand.
"I had no idea that buying gold online violated any rules or regulations," he said. "I was completely shocked to find that Blizzard [Entertainment had shut down my account just because I bought gold."
He wished that he had known more about the free ways to amass gold in WoW.
"I've since discovered that there are several ways to get rich in WoW that are quick, easy, and effective. If only I'd known about sites like http://gold-world-of-warcraft.com before I purchased gold online. I could still be playing my level 70 warrior and helping my guild run the new end-game instances as the main tank".
As it stands now, Ben is forced to start over from scratch on a whole new account. But he says he's learned his lesson.
"WoW is in my blood. I'm not ready to give the game up and call it quits yet. But I know better than to buy gold online now. There are tons of great tips and tricks out there that will help me level up and get gold quickly. And best of all, these tricks are completely within the guideline of the game."
