I’m definitely disappointed. I did the best I could and that's all I can ask of myself

Heartbreaking is the only way to describe Dan McGehee’s third attempt at the 100-mile cycling track world record. He started his attempt at 10:13 am, June 12th, which is when his daughter Hope was born. Today, he missed the record by only 4 minutes and 57 seconds. At noon, he was on track to beat the record after 467 of the 643.75 laps. Twenty minutes later, McGehee's pace started to slow a little, according to Seth Hassell of Doctor Finders. The current record is held by Rod Evans at 3:47:26

Deciding to go for a third attempt was a tough decision for McGehee after experiencing the physical exhaustion of such an attempt. Whether or not he will try again, is a decision McGehee will make after he’s re-cooperated.

A broken foot in a track race pushed McGehee into the world of cycling. McGehee has since competed in over 100 triathlons and twice participated in the Kona Ironman Triathlon World Championships. In addition to being the current UMCA 100-mile Road Record holder, McGehee’s accomplishments include numerous victories in ultra-endurance races with distances of over 500 miles.

Training for the event included sleeping in an oxygen tent, cycling 300-500 miles per week and eating and sleeping well. However, McGehee made sure his optometry business did not suffer and was not sacrificed in lieu of his record attempt. McGehee spent the last two weekends on call so he could take this weekend off to attempt the record.

“I’m definitely disappointed. I did the best I could and that's all I can ask of myself,” says McGehee. Life will continue as usual for McGehee, including volunteering to talk to kids about cycling and donating time and services to underprivileged people who need eye care. McGehee who is a member of RideClean promotes cycling without the use of performance enhancing drugs.

“We are so proud of Dan,” says Clint Ethington of Doctor Finders. “He is an amazing example of what human beings can accomplish if they are willing to push themselves. To us, it doesn’t matter if he broke the record or not, to us it’s about the journey and the drive that brought him here.”
